A Comprehensive Auto Fluid Color Guide

The fluids in your European automobile come in different colors to help you identify them. Hopefully, your car, truck, or utility vehicle never springs a leak, but if it does, you might be able to figure out the leaking fluid based on its color alone. Eurotech Auto Service & Repair can also determine which fluid is leaking from your vehicle and then repair the leak. Here is a comprehensive auto fluid color guide.

Blue

The solution you use to wash your windshield is blue. If your vehicle is leaking blue fluid, it’s probably the windshield washing solution. It might also be antifreeze/coolant, however, so check to make sure you don’t have blue antifreeze/coolant in the cooling system.

Brown

There are a few auto fluids in your European automobile that are brown. Your motor oil is brown, the brake fluid is brown, and the differential oil is brown. As an aside, old and dirty transmission fluid also turns brown.

Clear

The diesel fuel or gasoline in your automobile has a slight tint to it, but it basically looks clear. Therefore, it’s important to smell any clear fluid leaking out of your vehicle. If it smells like fuel, it is fuel. If it’s odorless, it’s just water.

Green

Blue is one color that antifreeze/coolant comes in, and green is another color. This automotive fluid also comes in a combination of blue and green or neon green. Driving your European automobile when it is leaking coolant can overheat the engine.

Orange

Another color of antifreeze/coolant is orange. This fluid may be orange originally, or it may turn orange because it has rust in it. If it does have rust in it, the bottom of your radiator is corroded. Eventually, the rust will eat through the bottom of the radiator and your vehicle will hemorrhage coolant.

Red

Red is another color in which multiple fluids come. For example, before it turns brown due to age, transmission fluid is red. If you have a hydraulic power steering system, this fluid is red, as well. Finally, you may have red antifreeze/coolant or brake fluid.

Yellow

The last color antifreeze/coolant comes in is yellow. Usually, this is a bright neon yellow or yellow-green. You can check the color of your coolant by looking at it in the radiator overflow reservoir. Do this when your engine is cold.
