Eurotech Auto Service & Repair can replace the water pump in your BMW when it goes bad. This generally happens once the BMW is 10 years old or older. If you are looking for a mileage reference, the water pump generally goes bad between 100,000 miles and 150,000 miles. The problems listed below are signs that the water pump needs to be replaced. Bring your Beemer to our shop right away.
Rust on the Pump
If you do drive an older BMW, we recommend that you pop the hood and take a good look at the water pump. It is located in the front of the engine, and your BMW’s owner’s manual should have a diagram of the engine to help you locate the pump. Once you have located it, check to see if it is rusty or corroded. If it is, the water pump has a small leak and it needs to be replaced as soon as possible.
Leaking Coolant
Failure to replace the water pump when it has a small leak is only going to lead to a larger leak and coolant spots or puddles on the garage floor. This is because the corrosion is eating its way through the pump and you will end up with holes in the pump. If your Beemer is leaking engine coolant, have it towed to our shop right away so we can determine from where the leak is coming.
Poor Circulation
Another sign that your BMW’s water pump needs to be replaced is poor coolant circulation throughout the engine. This is the job of the water pump; to circulate the coolant through the engine. We can test the circulation to see if the engine is being starved of coolant. One sign that it is is overheating.
Growling Sounds
As we mentioned above, the water pump is located in the front of the engine. As such, if the water pump starts to growl or grind, you will hear this noise coming from the front of the engine. It’s important to have the Beemer’s engine inspected immediately if it is making strange noises.
Constant Overheating
Finally, as you can imagine, your BMW is going to overheat every time that you drive it if there is a problem with the water pump. The engine needs plenty of coolant circulating through it in order to avoid overheating. A faulty water pump cannot supply the engine with the coolant it needs.
