Does the Engine Have to Be Rebuilt if the Head Gasket Cracks?

Yes and no. Eurotech Auto Service & Repair advises that if the head gasket cracks in your European automobile’s engine, the engine will have to be partially rebuilt. Do not worry, however. If you want to have this problem repaired, we can do so at our shop, and we will keep the cost of the repair as low as possible. Let’s talk about the signs that your head gasket is cracked.

Low Coolant Level

Your European automobile relies on coolant circulating through the engine to prevent the engine from overheating. When the head gasket blows, the coolant starts to leak out of the engine. Specifically, the coolant leaks through the crack in the head gasket and into the cylinders in the combustion chamber. If you constantly have to add coolant to the engine, your head gasket may be cracked.

Overheating Engine

Unfortunately, adding coolant to the engine is an exercise in futility. The coolant will continue to leak into the cylinders where it will be burned away when the engine produces combustion. This will leave the level of coolant in the engine consistently low. Consequently, the engine will overheat every time that you drive your European automobile due to the low coolant level.

In addition, the European engine is also going to overheat because the heat that is produced in the combustion chamber will leak into the engine. As the coolant leaks down into the cylinders, the heat rises through the same crack. This introduces excessive heat to the engine that increases its temperature. In fact, the engine can get so hot that the coolant will boil.

Diluted Motor Oil

We cannot stress enough that it is dangerous and destructive to drive your European automobile when the engine is overheating. In addition to the overheating problem, your European automobile’s engine will also have diluted motor oil circulating through it. The reason why is that the coolant mixes in with the oil once the head gasket cracks. This mixture of oil and coolant can damage the engine.

White Exhaust Smoke

One final sign that the head gasket is cracked in your European automobile is exhaust smoke that is the color white. When the coolant is burned in the cylinders, it produces white exhaust smoke. If you notice a blue tint to the white smoke, you also have oil burning in the cylinders.
