Is the Power Steering Pump Out in My Land Rover?

Bring your Land Rover to Eurotech Auto Service & Repair if it is doing any of the following things. These things are signs that the power steering pump should be replaced. You can expect to get about 100,000 miles out of the original pump. If your Land Rover is a high-mileage SUV, the power steering pump is going to go bad sooner rather than later. Let’s talk more about this below.

Steering Protests

The power steering pump may start to protest every time you turn the steering wheel if it is malfunctioning. Its protests will be groans, moans, and squeals. As you know, your Land Rover does not make noise when you turn the steering wheel. When it starts to make noise, it’s time for a steering system inspection. You may have a faulty steering pump or another problem with the steering system.

Stiff Steering Wheel

Another issue that points to the pump is a stiff steering wheel. This is because the steering pump is the system part that circulates the hydraulic fluid through the steering system. The reason why it is so easy to steer your Land Rover is that the hydraulic fluid helps you. If the steering wheel is hard to turn, it could be that the steering system does not have steering fluid circulating through it.

Unresponsiveness

At some point, your Land Rover may get unresponsive and refuse to turn even though you are turning the steering wheel. You cannot drive your Land Rover if you are unable to control the direction in which it goes. If the steering is being unresponsive, have the Land Rover towed to our shop rather than taking chances and getting into an accident because the vehicle wouldn’t turn.

Leaking Red Fluid

The power steering pump can also start to leak the power steering fluid that is in the system. This fluid is red. Therefore, if you see red spots on the garage floor, it’s possible that your Land Rover has a steering fluid leak. Check the reservoir when the engine is cold to see if the fluid level is low.

Silver in the Red Fluid

If, when you check the steering fluid level, you see silver mixed in with the red fluid, bring your Land Rover to our shop right away. The silver is metal from the power steering pump. The pump is dissolving into the fluid.
