Many crucial parts and systems are part of the drivetrain in your European automobile. For example, the transmission is part of the drivetrain. The wheels are also part of the drivetrain. Finally, the driveshaft is part of the drivetrain. This part needs to be serviced regularly in order to keep it lubricated. In addition, parts wear down that need to be replaced. As such, we recommend that you bring your European automobile to our shop once a year so we can inspect the drivetrain and driveshaft. If you are having any of the problems listed below, your driveshaft needs some TLC.
Vibration/Shuddering
When the driveshaft vibrates, it feels as if the underneath of your European automobile is vibrating. This is actually true. The driveshaft has bushings and a universal joint that is commonly called the U-joint. As these parts start to wear out, the driveshaft will start to vibrate and this will cause the underneath of your European automobile to vibrate. This vibration can get worse as you pick up speed.
Unfortunately, if the U-joint gets too loose, your European automobile will also vibrate or shudder as you pick up speed. Anytime you accelerate, you will feel as if your European automobile is faltering. This acceleration vibration can also occur if the center bearings in the driveshaft have gone bad. An annual inspection of the driveshaft allows us to replace these parts before they cause problems.
Undercarriage Noises
The driveshaft will also start to make strange noises if it is overdue for lubrication. Specifically, it will squeak constantly. The bearings need to be lubricated regularly as does the U-joint. It only makes sense that these parts will squeak if they are too dry. We can lubricate the driveshaft so that you won’t hear squeaking anymore. Unfortunately, this is not the only noise the driveshaft will make.
You may also start to hear loud clunking noises coming from underneath your European automobile if the U-joint is worn out. This is a sign that the damage is severe and the joint needs to be replaced as soon as possible. As an aside, you will also hear clunk noises coming from underneath the European vehicle if you have broken as suspension spring. The noise will come from a specific wheel.
Finally, the driveshaft can rattle or scrape if it is overdue for lubrication or, again, you’ve got worn-out parts. Do not worry. We can help. Call us today to schedule an appointment for your European automobile if you suspect the driveshaft is having problems.
