Signs My Land Rover’s Transmission Is Going Bad

Taking care of your Land Rover includes the transmission. The transmission should be serviced every 30,000 miles to make sure everything is okay. If you fail to service the transmission, you will run into premature problems. If you service the transmission faithfully, the transmission will last longer. Here are signs that your Land Rover’s transmission is going bad.

Slips Out of Gear

One of the things that can happen with a bad transmission is it can slip out of gear. This happens while you are in motion. Unfortunately, the Land Rover loses power immediately because the transmission has slipped out of gear and into neutral.

Skips Gears/Lags

The transmission can also skip gears or lag before shifting gears if it is going bad. In severe cases, the transmission may get stuck in one gear and refuse to shift out of it. This can make driving the Land Rover impossible because you must maintain a specific speed.

Is Unresponsive

If your Land Rover’s transmission is in serious trouble, it may become completely unresponsive. No matter how hard you try, you will not be able to get the transmission in gear. Consequently, you will be stranded with your Land Rover and will have to call a tow truck.

Leaks Red Fluid

One of the reasons why the transmission should be serviced every 30,000 miles is so that we can check for fluid leaks. Transmission fluid is the color red. If it is too old, it may be brown. If you see spots of either color on the garage floor underneath the Land Rover, the transmission may be leaking.

Overheats

Of course, a leaking transmission means that the level of transmission fluid circulating through it gets too low. Consequently, the Land Rover’s transmission may start to overheat while you are driving the vehicle. It is imperative that you have the transmission checked right away if it is getting too hot.

Makes Strange Noises

A faulty transmission can also make strange noises. It can clunk or grind when it shifts gears, or it can squeal. One sound that you never want to hear is humming when your Land Rover is in neutral.

Vibrates the SUV

Finally, if the Land Rover vibrates every time the transmission shifts gears, heads straight to our European auto service shop. The gear shifts should be smooth. There should not be any shaking or vibrating.
