When Do My BMW’s Filters Need to Be Changed?

There are general rules of thumb for when you’re BMW’s filters need to be changed. We are going to list the general recommendations below. We want to caution you, however. These are general recommendations; the recommendations for your specific BMW model can be found in your owner’s manual. Eurotech Auto Service & Repair would be happy to help you change your filters when they need to be changed. Again, here are the general recommendations for the filter change schedule.

Air Filter

Your BMW likely has two air filters. There is an air filter in the engine and an air filter in the passenger cabin. The engine’s air filter needs to be changed on average once a year. If you drive 12,000 miles before the year is up, have the engine’s air filter changed then. This filter helps to clean the air that eventually makes its way into the BMW’s combustion chamber. Naturally, the air inside the chamber must be as pure as possible.

Cabin Air Filter

The cabin air filter helps purify the air that blows through the vents into your BMW’s passenger cabin. This filter can go as long as 30,000 miles before it needs to be changed in most models. One way to tell if your cabin air filter is not doing its job properly is to gauge how you feel when you drive your BMW. If you feel sluggish or sick, it’s likely that the cabin air filter is clogged and you aren’t getting any fresh air in the passenger cabin.

Fuel Filter

Fuel must also be filtered before it makes its way into the combustion chamber. In fact, fuel is filtered twice. The fuel filter is designed to last longer than the air filter. A general recommendation is to have your fuel filter changed every 30,000 miles. If you haven’t driven your BMW 30,000 miles in two years, it’s a good idea to have the filter changed then. A clogged fuel filter will cause acceleration and engine performance issues.

Oil Filter

Finally, the oil filter has the dirty job of cleaning the oil after it has circulated through your BMW’s engine. A clogged oil filter can prevent oil circulation and cause serious damage to the engine. When we change your BMW’s oil, we also change the oil filter at that time. As such, the oil filter should be changed at every recommended oil change.
